Walnut Canyon Cabins

The Perfect Dog-Friendly Escape to Fredericksburg

After wrapping up an unforgettable few days exploring Big Bend, we weren't quite ready for the adventure to end.

On the drive home, we managed to book a completely impromptu two-night stay at Walnut Canyon Cabins in Fredericksburg, Texas, and looking back, I honestly couldn't imagine a better way to end the trip.

Fredericksburg has always been one of those places that feels easy to fall in love with. Between the wineries, wildflowers, peach orchards, local shops, and slower pace of life, it's the kind of destination that encourages you to slow down, and simply enjoy where you are.

Walnut Canyon Cabins fit that atmosphere perfectly.

Rather than trying to be an over-the-top luxury resort, it embraces everything you'd hope for in a Hill Country getaway. Quiet mornings, peaceful evenings, cozy cabins, and plenty of room to unwind after a day spent exploring.

Walnut Canyon Cabins delivered an incredible experience from start to finish, and quickly became one of our favorite stays we've reviewed so far.

The Boogie Breakdown

Every stay in the Holly Checks In series is scored using our Boogie Breakdown rating system. Each category receives a score from 1–5 Boogies based on both the human, and dog experience.

Because there's a huge difference between simply allowing dogs, and creating an experience that truly welcomes them.

Room Experience — 5 Boogies

From the moment we pulled up, Walnut Canyon Cabins felt exactly like the kind of place you picture when someone says "Hill Country cabin."

Our cabin was warm, welcoming, and incredibly spacious. There was more than enough room for a large kennel, or even multiple dogs without ever feeling cramped. It included a full bathroom with a spacious shower, a full kitchen, a cozy living area, and a covered porch complete with rocking chairs that quickly became one of our favorite places to relax, soak in the views, and feed the deer.

One thing I really appreciated was that this wasn't just a cabin designed for a quick overnight stay. Between the full kitchen, comfortable living space, and thoughtful layout, we easily could have spent a week here.

More than anything, though, this place made me feel nostalgic.

It reminded me so much of visiting my dad back home in the Hill Country in Johnson City. There was something about the quiet mornings, the slower pace, and the cozy atmosphere that immediately made it feel familiar, and comforting.

If you're looking for somewhere to disconnect for a few days, slow down, and simply enjoy being together, Walnut Canyon Cabins absolutely delivers. It isn't trying to be flashy, or over-the-top. Instead, it gives you exactly what a Hill Country cabin should: comfort, peace, and a place that genuinely feels like home.

Service & Hospitality — 5 Boogies

Service and hospitality ended up being one of the biggest reasons this stay felt so special.

When you book Walnut Canyon Cabins, you're not renting from some big management company. You're staying on a property that's owned, and cared for by the couple who built it, and it's obvious from the moment you arrive just how much they love this place.

Throughout our stay, we constantly saw them around the property feeding the animals, working on the cabins, and making sure everything looked its best. They were always happy to answer questions, recommend things to do, or help if we needed anything.

The cabins are stocked with just about everything you could think of, and if there happened to be something you needed, chances are they had it. We realized we needed laundry detergent during our stay, walked up to the house, and without hesitation they had exactly what we needed.

It never felt like we were inconveniencing them.

It felt like they genuinely wanted everyone staying there to have the best trip possible.

They also partner with several local wineries, and provide guests with discounts, and complimentary tastings at many of them which was such a fun bonus. While those partnerships may change over time, it was a really nice way to encourage guests to get out, and experience more of Fredericksburg.

One of my favorite little touches was that they even keep corn for the dear, and treats available for the cows on the property, so if you wanted to walk over and say hello, you could, and we did constantly!

Designed for Dogs — 4.5 Boogies

Walnut Canyon Cabins is, without question, an incredibly dog-friendly place to stay.

Dogs are genuinely welcomed here, not just tolerated, and that was obvious throughout our entire visit. There was plenty of room to walk Cicuta around the property, the owners were happy to see her, and at no point did we ever feel like bringing a dog was an inconvenience.

The property itself is peaceful, spacious, and exactly the kind of place I'd recommend to someone looking for a relaxing getaway with their dog.

One of the first things I look for when we check into a dog-friendly stay is a dog bed & blanket. Not because it needs to be anything fancy, but because it immediately tells me the property expected dogs to be there. It also gives them somewhere comfortable to settle in without us needing to bring a bulky bed from home, or encourage them onto the furniture.

Beyond that, little touches like treats, dog bowls, poop bags, or a toy can go a long way toward making a stay feel intentionally designed for traveling with pets rather than simply allowing them.

Walnut Canyon Cabins already does so many things right that adding something as simple as a dog bed, and blanket would have easily pushed this into five-boogie territory for me.

As it stands, it's still one of the most welcoming places we've stayed with Cicuta, and earning 4.5 boogies is still an exceptional score. It just missed perfection by the smallest of margins.

Gone Walkies — 5 Boogies

Fredericksburg is easily one of the most dog-friendly towns we've visited, and it's one of the few places where bringing your dog actually expands the experience instead of limiting it.

One of our favorite parts of the trip was simply walking up and down Main Street. Unlike a lot of shopping districts where dogs are limited to sidewalks and restaurant patios, many of the local businesses actually welcome dogs inside. That meant we weren't constantly worrying about the Texas heat, or taking turns going into stores while someone waited outside with Cicuta.

There were water bowls everywhere, plenty of shady sidewalks, and almost every restaurant seemed to have a dog-friendly patio. It felt like the entire town expected dogs to be there, and that made exploring incredibly easy.

One stop that's absolutely worth making is Dogologie, a boutique dedicated entirely to dogs. Of course it's dog friendly, but it's also just a fun place to browse if you're traveling with your pup.

One thing I would recommend, especially during the summer, is paying attention to the pavement. Main Street itself is still black asphalt, so my husband did carry Cicuta whenever we needed to cross the big road. Once we were back on the sidewalks, or inside the shops though, she was perfectly comfortable.

Fredericksburg is also famous for its wineries, and for good reason. There are so many dog-friendly wineries throughout the area that I honestly don't think you need to overthink it. Pick one, spend an afternoon relaxing, and you'll probably have a great time. We stopped by Texas Wine Collective, and had a really nice experience, but with so many wineries to choose from, I'd probably try somewhere different next time just to experience something new.

If you're traveling without a dog, I'd also highly recommend Rhinory. They care for Blake, a southern white rhino who serves as an ambassador for his species, and will one day be part of an important conservation breeding program. Dogs aren't allowed there because their scent can be stressful for Blake, which is completely understandable, but it's a genuinely special experience if you're able to visit without your pup.

Depending on the time of year, fresh peaches are another Fredericksburg staple. Unfortunately, the crop wasn't great during our visit, so we didn't get the full experience, but if you're visiting during a good peach season, I'd absolutely make time to stop at one of the local orchards or roadside stands. Most are dog friendly, and lot’s are a super fun stop!

Between the welcoming businesses, endless dog-friendly patios, wineries, and walkable downtown, we never once felt like bringing Cicuta limited our trip.

If anything, it made us slow down, and enjoy Fredericksburg even more.

Taste of the Stay — 5 Boogies

For the very first time in Holly Checks In, we actually get to rate the Taste of the Stay.

None of the properties we've reviewed so far have had anything "on the menu," so this was a fun surprise.

Rather than serving breakfast each morning, Walnut Canyon Cabins provides everything you need to make your own farm-fresh breakfast right in your cabin.

When we arrived, we had farm-fresh eggs from the chickens on the property, local Canadian bacon, canned biscuits, butter, fresh strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries, plus local coffee waiting for us. It was one of those little details that immediately made the stay feel thoughtful.

I wasn't expecting making breakfast on vacation to become one of my favorite parts of the trip, but there's something really relaxing about waking up, and taking your time with breakfast before heading into town. We ended up sitting on the porch with coffee, enjoying the quiet, and easing into the day instead of rushing out the door to find breakfast somewhere.

It fit the entire feel of Walnut Canyon perfectly.

Everything tasted fresh, the ingredients were high quality, and it felt like another extension of the hospitality we'd experienced throughout the rest of our stay.

Final Score — 4.9 Boogies

Walnut Canyon Cabins is exactly what I hope for when I book a cabin in the Texas Hill Country.

From the moment we pulled in, it felt peaceful. Sitting on the porch looking out over the canyon with nothing but rolling Hill Country for miles, making breakfast together before heading into town, wandering Main Street with Cicuta, and ending the day back at the cabin somehow managed to slow everything down in the best way possible.

The views are absolutely incredible, but I don't think that's what made this place so memorable.

What made it stand out was how much care had gone into creating the experience. Nothing felt thrown together just because glamping cabins are popular, or because someone wanted a pretty place for Instagram photos. Every little detail, from the fresh breakfast ingredients waiting for us to the way the property was maintained, made it obvious that the owners genuinely care about the people staying there.

A beautiful cabin is easy to find, but a place that actually feels welcoming is much harder.

If you're looking for a quiet weekend away, incredible Hill Country views, and a place that genuinely feels like someone built it because they love sharing it with other people, I couldn't recommend Walnut Canyon Cabins more.

We'll absolutely be back.
